Hannibal Bridge

Elephants? No, better the mules!

Tradition has it that the Carthaginian leader Hannibal and his elephants walked over this bridge on their way to Rapallo on their way to Rome, but, unfortunately, there is no evidence of this passage. The bridge, which once spanned the Boate River, nevertheless boasts a remarkable appearance and age: the work of the Magistri Antelami, famous workers specialised in stone construction, it dates back to the 12th-13th centuries.

Fact: The size and slope of the elegant single arch suggest that the bridge was not carriageable, but used to transport goods on pack animals.
